Supposedly 10w-30 is used in a 5w-30 engine when the mileage is high, which is when seals and stuff need to be leak-proofed after wear and tear; or so I've heard.

From Castrol's Site (the GTX HileMileage Oil Which I Use):

-Contains seal conditioners that provide added level of protection and help reduce leakage.

-Reduced deposit formation to minimize compression loss and maximize engine performance.


Not sure about the "heavier than 10w-30."
