180 thermostat?
I have a 1995 SE w/3100 and I was wondering if there is a 180 degree thermostat avaliable for it. If anyone knows where I could scoop one up I would appreciate the info.
Thanks, Corey:)

I'd actually stay away from a lower temp thermostat. I don't have ANY dyno charts to point to to promote one way or the other, but a teacher of mine (I'm in ASEP) was talking yesterday that a lower temp thermostat can actually hurt VE....and therefore hurt performance (emissions as well as power). It has to do with the fact that the engine was designed (cam profile mainly) to run a certain temprature.
A lower temp thermo would be good for longevity.........but so would working with the rest of the cooling system.

I had a 180 degree thermostat in my GA with no problems... that and a new aluminum radiator made it run sooo much cooler. The t-stat I got from Autozone, it was for a 94 beretta with a 3100... worked perfect. $12 I believe...

i would get the fan to turn on sooner instead of just a lower stat. a 180 would be ok but the fan comes on at 220^ or about. i don't see how a lower stat would hurt VE unless it opened way too soon and the rings didn't heat up so they wouldn't seal as well so it'd draw less air and more would leak out. like canada said work on other parts first.

Yeah a fan override switch would be nice too... I was gonna do that but I never got around to it.

This would only apply to EFI......carbs are a different bird. Most people think that their new car is just like there old muscle car. Thats why most people think this way.
I would get a better radiator before a different fan setting.

When it comes to lower temp thermostat for performance, it is usually because a performance chip requires it. Since most chips advance the timing, it requires lower temp to prevent detonation. I wouldn't expect a low temp thermostat to do anything on it's own.

Your car could run hot for several reasons..........poor radiator, poor water pump, poor water jack.......you get the idea.
Hell, your gauge/sensor could even be off......there is nothing saying thats accurate.

I have one. I put it in while we installed my headers. Its great except now that its winter my car never really heats up and it makes a cold ride to work.
