Air bags?
My fiancee is adament about keeping the 92 instead of upgrading to something more modern, practical, and safe. I'm wondering, how hard would it be to add airbags to my 92?
I'm thinking of finding a 95 parts car (hopefully 95-1/2 OBD2) to get a powertrain from (I'd rather have an 3100 in there then deal with my 3300/TH125 nightmare). I could also steal all the necessary interior parts.
Sound practical? Or will the wiring be impossible and unsafe?

That's alot of work. The airbag system has several modules all over the car. IMO it's not worth swapping in a gen 1 SRS system. Hell, sometimes I'd rather take my chances without it.
As far as the 3100 powertrain and all, why not just find a used 94-95 to buy for her? Swapping everything sounds like a wiring nightmare to me.

She says the car has too much sentimental value. Maybe she'll change her mind when she realizes how much cheaper and easier it would be to replace the whole car.
I'd actually get her a much newer GA, but she hates the binnacle split gauge pod.

96-98 Grand Am's aren't very high priced anymore... Why not just look into one of those with a 3100?

I hear ya on the sentimental value. Thing is it might be better to move on rather than seeing die a slow death. Or get an additional car. That's what I did. Save the car you care about more for those special occasions, friday commutes, etc.

Or as the Lansing chassis assembly employees call it, the "Dolly Parton Dash" ;)

Already done that. I took her back to the dealership to test drive a 2001 silver GA...nice car. She liked the way it handled, but she couldn't get comfortable with that damn instrument cluster.
She test drove a 98 Maliboooo too and she hated it. Said it handled like crap. I dunno about the Alero -- sure it's nice having hood struts, but the taillights are really ugly IMO. And for some reason all the used ones I saw had a beige interior, which is out of the question.

Keep in mind the Alero has the single cluster, and is the same as the 99+GA's.

I don't think you can legally add airbags to a car. There is a ton of work involved. Its good to be safty oreinted....I just hope you don't question your wiring skills when you first get into the car and look at that live bag.

if your insurance company found out you added or subrtracted airbags, you would more than likely be dropped from their converages...just because theres a lot of planning that goes into an air bag and the car is made with either having, or not having, an air bag in mind...i asked my agent...adding it would be a no go with almost every company
