1992 k1500 Silverado

I just bought a 1500 4x4 chevy with a 350 v8 and a manual transmission. The truck has been sitting for awhile and it's hard to shift when your accellerating hard (seems like a lot of resistance). Should I be concerned about the clutch or transmission oil? I'm changing the motor oil tomorrow, should I drain a little from the transmission and check? What colour am I looking for? This is my first 4x4, is there anything additional I should check?
