how hard is it to change a 4x4 tranny?

Im looking around for an old 4x4 pickup to use for fishing/hunting. I found a 91 gmc 2500 4x4 on craigslist for 1500 obo. The guy says the reverse is out on it. I emailed him but Im still waiting for him to reply with the vin and how milage. I found a place that will rebuild trannys for a small shop fee and cost of parts. The shop is part of a vocational program at the local state penn. so Im not sure If I'd be able to take the whole truck in. Its either have the transmission rebuilt or find a used one at the junkyard. How hard would it be to replace a 4x4 transmission? Anyone know of a website with some diagrams/photos?

Re: how hard is it to change a 4x4 tranny?

I found my 90' burban on craigslist for $3500. Runs great and came w/ a plow. Answer to your question, I have an 84' Blazer (full size) that I took out and installed the tranny several times. It isn't extremely difficult to do. You just have to remember which bolts came from where. You may have to remove part of the exhaust system (y-pipe) so that you can drop the tranny. It is pretty heavy if you leave the transfer case attached to the tranny. I actually bench pressed the tranny the first couple of times, but I recommend using a jack if you arent used to lifting more than 150 lbs. Just remember to unbolt the torque converter before seperating the tranny from the engine block, it will make things a lot easier. I would recommend getting a Haynes manual for that vehicle if you get it. I have one for every car I own. Oh, you might want to wear some gloves, your knuckles will get busted up.
