Suburban Chop

I have a 1990 4wd Suburban.

My plan is to chop the section off of my 84 Blazer where the cap mounts to and transplant it onto my 'burban.

The body lines look like they are the same and the rear window looks like it has the same forward slant.

Dose anyone have any experience doing this or any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Suburban Chop

I have pics of both vehicles.

I haven't started cutting yet. I thought it would be awesome to have a 'burban with the removable top that comes on a full size Blazer. I was going to fix up the blazer, but I got a good deal on my Suburban. So I am thinking about just chopping the top off and doing a transplant. I even thought of jacking it up another foot or so. My wife will love that.

I will have to take pictures while I am doing the work and share them with you guys.

Re: Suburban Chop

I haven't had a chance to start on my burban chop yet. They have been killing me w/ overtime @ work. I have actually had a change of plans.

I am not going to cut up my blazer. Instead I am going to use 3/16" steel flat bar to fab the area where the cap mount will be. I will essentially make 2 "L" shapes looking from the side of the truck and tie it together with flat bar across the top. The flat bar will be 2 sets pancaked. After all is in place and braced and welded securely I will match drill about 20 holes or so, cut the burban between the flat bar with a cut off wheel, remove the top, tap the holes in the flat bar in the bed and drill the holes 1/16" larger on the flat bar on the "newly made" cap.

Sound crazy? I hope so. w/ this set-up i can later make a roll cage w/ the possibility of a roll up canvas top that would mount to the flat bar. Maybe even bolt in the back section of a standard p/u.

Enough said. What do you think?

Re: Suburban Chop

I think it sounds interesting but certainly would have a better time understanding once I see it :) Are you concerned about adding a ton of weight or anything?

Re: Suburban Chop

With the 'burban I'm not really concerned w/ adding extra weight. The thing already weighs as much as a tank. If I had to guesstimate the added weight I would say it would be around 50 - 60 lbs. I also want to rhino line the whole interior up to a few inches below the window line. My wife wants me to paint it yellow and paint TONKA on the sides. I guess she is referring to it being one of my toys.
