Amp Question
I found this amp Profile "California" Series and it says 200x2RMS@ 4ohm ... Is that the kinda amp I want? I found it online brand new for $115 with a 1 year warranty... I wanted a decent amp but not spend more than $130... any help would help and suggestions... Just remember not more than $130... Thanks  |

it's not the ohms of the SUB - it's the Ohms of the amp. It's kind of a complicated thing... but the lower the ohms, the better and just because a sub says 4 ohms doesn't mean it can't run on 2 ohms, 1 ohm, or 1/2 an ohm (i've heard of this happening - never saw it though :( ) It just depends on how you wire it, the amp, and how much you know....

that amp wouldn't do right. if you have 4 ohm DVC that means they'll come out to 2 or 8 ohms. you run the amp at 2 ohms and you're going to get roughly 400 watts rms, you run it at 8 and you get roughly 100. unless only having 100 watts wouldn't bother you

First off - if they're dual 4 ohm coils, that's the CORRECT setup for a 2 channel amp like that. You run the coils in series to get 8 ohms each, then run the two in parallel for a final 4 ohm load, and bridge the amp to that. Perfect.
Second - MOST - if not all - speakers will test out a little off from their rated minimum impedance. A 4 ohm speaker usually bottoms out at about 3.6 ohms, so that reading you got at BB is perfectly normal. As to why it blew up - couldn't tell ya', I wasn't there. The Profile California series isn't BAD, but they aren't great, either. If you can find a JBL 160.2, that's a better bet for about the same cash. Ikes had them around for a long time for $130 plus shipping, so it's a tad over budget, but well worth it IMO.

nick as with anything...you get what you pay for...honestly unless you get a awesome deal on used/hot shit, you arent really going to get a high quality amp for 130...however check out www.thezeb.com for stereo shit....i would recommend RF for an amp but thats just me

one thing i have learned is cheap and good/decent can not be used in the same sentence....unless as formentioned that you get a good deal on some used stuff, the HK MA stuff can be found rather cheap, just me $.02
