Problem with audio setup?
Hey all
i bought some subs, 12's don't know what brand, and a cheap amp, a Sony Xplode 222 w.
now i know it's nothing special, no great setup, not a lot of power, but better than nothing.
but the thing is, that i think my head unit is crappin out on it. I get no base from them at all, despite the fact that the unit appears to recognize the presence of the subs because it give me sub volume control. the subs move slightly, but produce no audible sound. all my connections seem solid, and my amp definately has power... so ... any thoughts?

obviously, the volume setting on the amp itself is turned up, right?
try them out elsewhere, like on your home stereo, maybe someone else's car, maybe even in parellel with your rear deck speakers, just to make sure they work as they should.
if they do, i'd double check the connections on the RCA cable and speaker wires.
is the box at recommended specs? i guess you probably don't know what those are since you don't know the brand :p but if it's a ridiculously big or small box, or has a bad port setup, that'll cause it to produce little-to-no bass.
good luck

the boxes are home made... no porting. they're 14 " square each sub.
they work wonderful on someone elses car. and my deck isn't powerful enough to drive them off of the rear speaker... ;(
will recheck conncections.. and maby connections with deck..

DON'T CONNECT SUBS TO YOUR HU SPEAKER OUTPUTS FOR ANY REASON. EVER. this is like trying to drive a dump truck with motorcycle engine.
make sure your amp is wired correctly. start with the ground wire first and work your way back. make sure there is no paint where is meets the body and for god's sake, don't ground to the screw that holds down your seat.
if you use tape or shrink tube on any connections make sure the wire didn't work lose, make sure the HU is set correctly. you might think it is but there are MANY, many decks out there that will not power the sub outputs if you have the speakers faded forward.
i could go on for an hour bout the possiblilities but just check everything carefully and remember to Keep It Simple Stupid. bet you will feel silly when you find the problem right under your nose. good luck
feel free to IM me if you need alittle more involved help with this. i was an installer for years and i do all my own work.

i think i may have found my problem.. this deck came from a car that i wrecked, but iwasn't there to pull it from the wreckers so my dad did. Well i guess when he pulled it out, one of the sub outs, got pulled off, and since there is both a signal and ground in one wire, they kinda shorted out. So i think that most of the current going through the deck for the subs is just going through the short instead of going through the amp.. i now have to seperate all the wires to stop them from shorting.. it's gonna take awhile and i just don't have the time right now.
but ya... i think this is the problem.. any thoughts? i won't get around to pulling my dash off to get at the wires until at least.. hmm.. posisbly two weeks.. so if you think that this is a stupid idea then tell me now and save me the pain

could be. you could always try to plug in into the front or rear outputs and see if it works.

my front and rear are both still factory wired... i would have to cut and splice wires to do that... which i don't think is the best option. The only changed things in my system are the subs, and the HU
