To get serious a lil for a sec.....I just put Castrol's GTX High Milage oil (10W-30) in my 92 Grand Prix.....and I STILL don't understand WHY???, Since my car had a BRAND NEW GM 'crate engine' installed in it about 60 or 70k miles ago.....but my GP DEF burns oil. The valve gaskets are worn out pretty bad I guess...cause I when first START it...it smokes a lil. Runs GREAT, but sometimes smokes (burning oil)
well check this out, I'd HIGHLY RECOMMEND Valvoline's FULLY SYNTHETIC High Milage Oil, because I had it in my GP for a little over 3k miles and BARELY any smokin.
..JUST changed the oil...and used the NON-syn...HIGH MILAGE by Castrol..and it's been BURNING that oil NOTICEABLY more!
NOW when I start it...a big cloud of smoke comes out....that's PROBABLY because the oil's not as RESISTANT to BURNING.
LOL...I don't care. The GP is my beater and it gets me where I gotta go EVERY TIME....204k on the car and NO other probs...so that's cool at least.
That SYN. high milage oil is GOOD SHIT though....I'm gonna put that in my 92 HO soon. (before I used Mobil's Syn Blend HIGH MILAGE oil)

Hey...I JUST bought MORE 10W-30 FULLY SYNTHETIC! High Milage oil. I'm DEF puttin that shit in the '92 Quad 4 HO'....

GOOD SHIT...and I'd HIGHLY recommend it! It's HARD to 'FIND' it on the shelf though...it's CALLED Max Life...and looks IDENTICAL to the REG Max Life oil, in red bottles....but it says SYNTHETIC in BOLD Black letters on the front.

GOOD AS HELL!.....since *MOST* of us have OVER 75k on cars. And if you don't you're car PROBABLY isn't as 'interesting' as the ones that DO have that many miles......haha...b/c that's MORE TIME, and MORE MONEY spent on the OLDER 'HIGH milage' GA's!

Aiiight...later

I 'broke in' my new LD9 with reg. castrol oil, then the next oil changed i promptly switched to 10w-30 Mobil 1 Full Synthetic oil, and I beat on the new LD9, and it takes it like a champ

I do, however, have a small oil leak, but Im sure its from the filter since Im a potzer and probably didnt put enough oil around the seal or didnt tighten it enough. Either way, Id highly recommend 10w30 mobil one for an QUAD or TWIN CAM engine with low or high miles. (I also ran 10x30 mobil full syn on my old twinny until I spun the 3rd bearing -- whoops.)

mike it sounds like your problem is valve seals. they like to leak when the car is sitting. not so much while running. Pretty easy to replace but you do need some special tools though

Talking overkill

20 w50 is overkill. It will rob HP bigtime! I run a quad 4 on a local dirt track with the engine turning 4200 to 6200 lap after lap and I run 10 w30 castrol with a 1/2 qt. of Lucas oil stablizer. Simple.

My motor has 168,000 miles on it's original rings and oil pump PLUS 2 1/2 seasons of racing. I did replace the bearings when I got the motor. WOULDN'T YOU???

Just goes to show you what regular oil changes can do.

I would stay away from synthetics on a motor with over 100K on them because it's too slippery.

WOW bro.... That's crazy... 168k on it w/ that kind of use... that's real sick man. NICE! Hey, I just bought a new GP! Well, it's actually a 2000, but it could be called 'NEW' - CURRENTLY has 8,800 miles on it ! (picked it up 2 weeks ago with only 7,500 orig miles)

Anyway, I think the orig owner changed the oil about 3 or 4 times in those seven years. I just changed it last night and put a Mobil One oil filter (haha, I know I know, not 'neccessary' but I said, "Ehhh, 10 bucks. F it!" ya know?) w/ 10W-30 (factory recommended oil). It was changed with 7,750 miles on it, pretty dirty too! Should I change it AGAIN in like 2k miles or so, just get the remaining dirt/gunk that was in the previous [JUNK] conventional oil out?
...or is that TOTALLY unnessary ya think? Either way, I plan on changing it every 5k miles after that (since I'll be using Mobil One). That oil is sooo good, I don't think it needs to be changed much more frequently.. DO YOU GUYS?

PS - Mobil One NOW makes a "HIGH MILAGE" FULL synthetic! How bout that!? It's ABOUT time !

Re: Brand/Type of Motor Oil to Use...

i use Kendall semisyn in both my car and jeep both 10/30 but the jeep gets 5/30 in the winter to help the cold start up (thinking about going to a 15/30 for the car next summer though)

the car used to run mobil1 then when i got it i tried royal purple and it was burning it so i went back to mobil1 and it was still burning it so i decided to go too the kendall cause i was sick of paying so much for oil when it was going through so much, so when i figure out the rich condition (the car runs excessively rich and i believe that is the reason it is going through so much oil) i will switch back to the good stuff but for now i will stick to changing my oil with the kendall every 2500 kms so i dont through a rod bearing

as for filters i use the napa nascar select in both vehicles and have never had a problem

If your car is burning oil that doesn't necessarily mean it's running rich. If you're running rich then you are burning fuel in the exhaust due to an excess amount of it. If you're burning oil you have a leak somewhere (pistons, headgasket, etc)

This is true. Yah Chris!

And you're right about the 'expensive-ness' lately....Even OIL prices are going up annually! Friggin oil....and GASOLINE! ahhH!

(I used to get a 5-quart bottle of Mobil One for like $15.XX, at Wally World, just a few years ago...Now it's like $22-23)
