Lets not rule out the possibility that your beretta probably had slipping clutches after years of use, and then we can get on with talking about the GA.
not ALL ga's (is that short for "gay"?) will feel quite as crisp on the shift. Final drive ratio comes into play on this one, and I forget the exact numbers, but GAGT's have somewhere around 3.29 final drive, I think some have a 3.26, and other N-bodies (like mine) has a 3.05. As you can guess, mine isn't as quick off the line, but gets lots better gas mileage on the highway.
Anyhoo, back on topic. The GAGT might have felt like it had a firmer shift by virtue of it having a more torque oriented gear ratio, and on another possibility may have had an aftermarket electronic shift enhancer put in, or possibly a DHP replacement PCM, which is popular with the GA crowd.
