if you want to be fast and furious. Go ahead and do us all a favor and go buy a civic. Because you are stupid for saying that. GOSH!

you wouldn't happen to be "GRANDAMMAN17" as well, would you? whats wrong, did you forget your password?

and please, for the record, do NOT make your grand am "FAST and FURIOUS!" or you won't be "smoking" anybody. if you would like to learn how to make your engine more powerful, you can check out quad4forums.com but i warn you, people rip on "fast&furious" people even worse over there ;) however if your choice of diction is right then we'd be glad to help anybody.

I RUN IN A CLASS WHERE THE MOTORS ARE REQUIRED TO BE "STOCK" SO I HAVE TO BE CREATIVE. HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS:

K&N AIR FILTER

ALUMINUM FLYWHEEL

GO TO YOUR LOCAL GM DEALER AND ORDER A PULLEY FROM A 91 ACHIEVA SCX. THEY ARE ABOUT 160 BUCKS AND THEY RETAIN THE RUBBER RING AND KEEP VALVE TRAIN HARMONICS DOWN. I ACTUALLY MAKE MORE POWER WITH THAT PULLEY(EVEN THOUGH IT'S HEAVYER) THAN AN ALUMINUM PULLEY. THE SCX PULLEY IS ALSO MUCH SMALLER.

GET RID OF THE SMALL PLASTIC SCREEN IN THE INTAKE TRACK (YOU HAVE AN AIR FILTER FOR THAT).

LIGHTEN THE CAR AS MUCH AS POS'BLE. LIKE:
LIGHTWEIGHT SEATS-
DITCH THE SOUND DEADENING MATERIAL-
USE A 92 GRAND AM DASH AND STEERING COLUMN...HOWEVER, THIS WILL GET RID OF THE AIRBAGS-
DITCH THE SPARE TIRE/JACK AND TRAVEL WITH A CAN OF FIX-A-FLAT AND SOME PLUGS-
IF YOU DO THE DASH CHANGEOVER AND GET RID OF THE AIR BAGS, YOU CAN DITCH ALL THE WIREING AND HARDWARE THAT GOES WITH THE STUFF-
GO TO YOUR LOCAL AUTO SUPPLY STORE AND ORDER A MASTER CYL. FOR A 92 GRAND AM WITHOUT ABS...YOU WILL NEED ADAPTERS TO FIT YOUR CURRENT LINES INTO THE NEW MC.-
THEN YOU CAN DITCH ALL THE WIREING AND SENSORS THAT GO WITH THE ABS. INCLUDING THE ABS MODULE

GET ON EBAY AND WIN A SET OF HO CAMS AND COMPUTER. BE PATIENT...THEY ARE ON THERE ALL THE TIME.

THAT'S ALL I CAN THINK OF...OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. :)

10pracing, SCCA Stock class, allows for very few changes to the engine. You're not allowed to change cams or pullies, unless troughs parts where available for that engine, for that year. If you have made these kinds of changes and your (assuming) 94 or 95 Grand Am to complete in the stock class, then your cheating.

Here's a good resource for the rules.
http://www.moutons.org/sccasolo/

Does anyone know if there are any performance gains to be had when using HO Cams in an LO engine?

Also 10pracing, please don't make entire posts with caps lock on. It make it kinda hard to read your post.

cheating...who, me???

Cheating...what a laugh. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE cheats and you know it. If everyone is cheating, then it becomes a way of competing. Besides, who said anything about SCCA? AAAAANNNND...he already said that he installed a tuneable muffler. Since when it that stock? NOTE: No VIN numbers mean that I can run the car as anything from a 92 through 98.

Stock is as stock does.

As far as me... I use stock parts. If that's cheating...tell the guy with the neon to get rid of the JE pistons he installed. And the other neon with aftermarket cams and ported heads. I beat those a-holes with "stock" parts that were designed when Ronald Reagan was in the White House! Gotta love it!

As far as putting the HO cams in a LO quad goes. That will work. Just remember that the HO motor had 10:1 compression vs. 9:1 for the LO motors. Camshafts are matched to static compression to build a certin amount of cyl. pressure. (Remember BOTH of these motors must be able to run on low octane fuel.) Since the HO cams have longer duration, a higher static compression ratio may be necessary to build decent cyl. pressure. One should examine wether is would be worth the time and effort (not to mention the expense) to perform such an operation. All this is directly related to the rpm range you are working with and the gearing involved.

Class dismissed.

But I just read in another post you run on a dirt track circuit. I can see where it might be harder to tell whats going on under the hood with all that dirt everywhere.

Again, I was assuming SCCA where things after the Cat are allowed to be changed.

Dirt here...dirt there...DIRT EVERYWHERE!

Actually, the motor stays pretty clean. Just some dust once the track dries out. I do make great efforts in keeping it that way. Like cleaning the engine compartment every week and flushing the fins in the rad.. Most of the guys there are amazed with how clean the thing is. Although I wouldn't EAT off of it...you can work on the car and clean your hands with just a little soap and water.

Check it out...last year I ran a Grand Am. Won 5 Feature races with the thing. I am currently building a Z24 that will debut 1/2 way through the season. I wonder how I'll do with 250 lbs less weight to lug around? ;)
