3800 L36 throttle position sensor

I drove the car yesterday to do some routine maintenance on it. At WOT, it was dogging from 40mph, and making the SES lamp blink while it was happening. It would get to highway speed eventually, it just took some effort. My wife said she had just thought the car was "being lazy" and didn't think anything of it.

I hooked up the laptop and discovered the TPS doesn't budge from 0%. So that makes sense. Looks like a new one costs $52, which sucks. But I'm assuming it should be easy to install.

That sucked. I needed to buy a pack of security bits to remove the sensor. I replaced it, and have the same problem. 0% all the time.

Computer problem or wiring problem? I'm leaning more towards wiring.

Re: 3800 L36 throttle position sensor

I had the cat replaced back in January (for other reasons). Afterward, the problem went away. Hooray.

The car has since been sold.

hmm never saw this thread. I wouldve guessed an open circuit somewhere. definitely wouldn't have guessed the cat could affect your TPS signal, but would suspect it to be hurting your performance and igniting your SES light if its fouled.

whatchu drivin' nowadays?

if its blinking it usually indicates a misfire, you need to have your scanned somewhere so you can dtermine whats wrong

Re: 3800 L36 throttle position sensor

I would have never known that if I did not have both experiences happen to me.

The 3800 is a great tuner, but very touchy, the one thing about them, is you are not going to have issues with a lof the electronics, it is usally something mechanical and easy like a cat. The early 3800 L36 has had some head and head gasket problems as well. I am glad it worked out for you, sorry my post was so late.
