Need a few suggestions - bad charging system

Hey, I just finished installing a new alternator on a friend's car. After we fired it up (jump start) the car died within 5 minutes, and the battery gauge was reading in the red. car is a 1993 Buick Lesabre, 3800. I'm thinking battery cable to alt. The connections looked clean, and the battery tested out fine. Any other suggestions?
