Questions on 3100

hey i have a 98 lumina ls with the 3100. as of right now its just got a custom CAI and glasspack muffler. thats made a noticeable increase and sounds great... but like most of us motor heads, thats not enough. ive heard that you can bolt up a set of 3.4 heads? is this true? and then i assume you use a 3.4 cam? is there any computer work that needs to be done? i plan on adding a few other things besides the heads but i just want to make sure i can do that first? any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I also plan on...

New Coil Packs.. Either Accel or Summit
Ignition Box.. Either MSD or Summit
Larger Injectors.. No brands decided yet
Make a new Intake since my current one is just about a half inch from hitting my fan
Probably get a new full exhaust made just to get some fresh pipe under there
New 02 sensors
Need a complete fuel like made since mine is a little ghetto rigged

so if you have any input on any of that, it would be greatly appreciated too. Thanks Again

Re: Questions on 3100

2000 and up 3100 and 3400 heads are the same.

Don't waste your time with a stock cam. WOT-TECH.com sells high performance roller cam replacements.

Get a grasp on tuning, but if you increase the fuel pressure a little with an adjuastable regulator, you probably won't need bigger injectors.

Re: Questions on 3100

okay well i plan on pulling the motor regaurdless. its got 125k miles and the thermostat has been bad for a while. as im sure you know an engine that runs at 100 degrees constantly is not a happy one. plus its a 3.1 and has bad intake manifold gaskets. ive also been told that injectors go bad on those at high mileage so i figure if ive got the intake manifold off throw some new injectors at it. but i had never thought of also adding a pressure regulator. i plan on getting it honed, possibly bored and rebuilding. the car was free so i really dont mind throwing money at it. id really like to run the stage 4 cam, but really dont know how to get the compression that high. thats why i was lookin to put different heads on. and i know different pistons and deck clearance could help but not real sure they make many piston options for a lumina.

my goal is to make as much power as possible n/a then throw some nitrous at it. since you seem to know a lot more about tuning 60 degree motors (sorry im a honda guy, ready to try something new) if you could just give me a list of possible combinations or just a list of what needs to be done that would be greatly appreciated! and i love your firebird!

Re: Questions on 3100

You can use Camaro 3.1 pistons to get about 11:1 or so compression.

Re: Questions on 3100

if you're going to do all that, you could consider dropping in a 3800 s/c. should be fairly straightforward on a w-body, esp. considering later model lumina LTZ's came with the 3800. you can make quite a bit of power with that engine fairly easily.
