Transmission help please

i have a 97 3.1
driving on the highway the other day and my check engine light came on
at the same time my temp gauge was increasing
i was going about 65 with the rpm's around 4500
so i slow down to 55 and get in the slow lane and the car does better and the temp goes down
get to where im going and check coolant and its ok, look under car for any fluid leaking, nothing
so i drive it back home carefully and no problems other than the check engine light on
take it to my dad and he pulls the code and its p1870, transmission slippage
after doing some researchi found this is a common problem but found no real diagnosing fo the problem
alot of people just went ahead and replaced the transmission
some people went in and replaced the some parts
i really dont want to sink anymore money into this car since i just drive it to shows and it sits in my garage until the next show
i found that there is a company, sonnax, that alot of people have used for replacement parts

it was explained to me that the heat the transmission is creating is whats causing my enigne to get so hot at high temp

im just looking for some guidance or at least a push in a more inexpensive direction , thanks

if you have a 4t60-e id recomend getting the tranny flushed and use a tranny cooler, its common for the lines from the factory to build up crud and restrict flow not to mention it heats up with coolant temperature. email me at parkave_91@yahoo.com if you have add'tl questions
