Question 454 crate motor oil consumptiom

Greetings,

I recently joined GMPT and I'm hoping someone can help me out with this question. I installed a new long block 454 crater motor in a 69 Chevelle. I put about 700 miles on the motor and checked the oil and it was down half a quart. I'm thinking that it should not have burned any oil since its new. There are no leaks, I see no smoke from the exhaust. Does anybody have any idea what is normal for this type of motor?

thanks,
Lou

i would think it would burn oil for a little bit until it breaks in... i would just keep an eye on it for the next 500 miles. if the oil consumption doesn't go down then perhaps you have a problem.

change the oil every couple hundred miles for the first 1000 or so. You want to make sure there are no particles in the oil.

Go ahead and change it and see if you have any metal dust or shavings...if you are unsure of what its from you can send the oil to Amsoil and they can tell you what the metal came from.
