Big Block Break in Period

I recently bought a 454 crate motor from GM for my 69 Chevelle. The guys at GM said I can use 10w-30 motor oil to break it in. I have about 2000 miles on this motor and it uses a quart every 1000 miles. Does this sound right? Should I have used another vecosity oil to break it in? Maybe 5-20?

Thanks,
Lou
