2.4 timing

i have a 96 ga and my timing went in the car. im debating on not fixing it.i was wondering what the possibility would be of the valves being damaged when the timing went. has anyone had any problems with the engine after replacing the timing chain gears and adjuster. i don't want to replace the timing if the valves could be damaged.
