GM recalls trucks over engine fire concerns

Hoping to avoid its own version of the Ford truck fire fiasco (pictured), General Motors and the NHTSA are ordering the recall of 38,439 General Motors SUVs and pickups because of a potential fuel leak that could result in an engine compartment fire. GM is recalling the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche, 2004-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500, 2006 Chevrolet Kodiak, 2004-2006 Chevrolet Silverado, 2004-2005 Chevrolet Suburban, 2006 Chevrolet Suburban 1500, 2004-2006 GMC Sierra, 2006 GMC Topkick 6500, and 2004-2006 GMC Yukon XL.

General Motors tomorrow (August 10th) will hold a "product celebration and rally" in Warren, MI at the GM Tech Center Event Island, the hill located north of the GM Vehicle Engineering Center and just west of Van Dyke. As rumored earlier this week, the automaker is expected to announce plans to put the Chevrolet Camaro into production for 2008. An anticipated 7,000 guests including employees and automotive enthusiasts are expected to show up. The event will be hosted by GM North America Engineering Vice President Ed Koerner. Special guests include Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper and Vice President GM Global Design Ed Welburn, who are expected to talk about the Camaro. Meanwhile, the Canadian Auto Workers union is close to securing the rights to produce the Camaro in Oshawa, Ontario.

Cadillac today crossed the quarter million mark for CTS sales with the delivery of two Cadillac CTS sedans to twin sisters Tara and Robin Luyber of Oakhurst, N.J. Which of the Luyber sisters owns the car that is precisely the quarter-millionth CTS? Given that the cars were purchased in tandem at Gold Coast Cadillac, the top-selling CTS dealership, that race officially ends in a tie. "The 250,000 th CTS sold marks an important moment for Cadillac," said general manager Jim Taylor. "CTS sales increased in each of its first four years on the market, an unusual phenomenon in our industry. We're very proud that consumers have reacted so positively to this car." CTS sold more than 61,000 units in the U.S. in 2005, compared to roughly 38,000 units in 2002, an increase of 60% over that period.

All good news .. glad my 03 silverado isn't getting a recall! However, with 140,000 miles on it I wouldn't mind a new engine :)
