Computer problem need help!

I hope there are some computer guys on here that can help me out. Ok here is the problem. My girlfriend has been having trouble connecting to her network(internet access from her apartment complex) I am pretty good with computers because I used to work at an internet provider but I was unable to fix it. So we called the technician. He could not find anything wrong and said that windows must be messed up and needed to be re installed. When you hook up another computer to her LAN jack it works. When her computer is connected to the LAN jack the internet works a little bit. I decided to ping her gateway IP adress. About 25% of the time, it timed out and came back with a 25% loss. The other 75% of the time it worked perfect. So sometimes it will go directly to a website and other times it wont do anything. So I decided to take her computer to my apartment to see if it was her computer or a hardware problem within the network. Well her computer works perfectly at my apartment. While it was connected I went ahead and downloaded all the virus and sypware updates. I ran Norton and AVG virus scans and it came up with nothing. There is also no spyware detected. Also downloaded the latest windows updates. Took it back to her apartment and it works slightly better but nothing near good. It still times out sometimes when I ping it. I do not understand how it can work perfectly on my network but not on hers. Have I not checked something? Any ideas of what the problem may be?:banghead:

Did you try replacing the network cable?

Has it always done this? or did it start happening recently? Did you try hooking another computer to the jack?

Is there a jack in the wall? Did you take it out and inspect the wires?

Do does the lan cable go on the out side of the building anywhere? If so is it shealded cable?

Just started recently. Yes tried hooking another computer up to the same jack and it works fine. Yes jack is in the wall, but I did not inspect the wires. The cables do go outside the building(throught the walls) but are in a locked up box where I cannot get to them. Basically other computers work on her jack, her computer works on other networks but her computer does not work on her network. I am confused.

is your ethernet card onboard or on it's PCMIA card? It maybe your ethernet card it self or you need to get the drivers.

maybe, no guarantee on me knowing what I am talking about. I have been out of computers for a while ;)

I was thinking that too, but why would the network card work all of the time when hooked up to my network and just not on hers? But I might have to try it anyway.

Thats what I'm saying. But, the current edition(s) of OS X are still only powerpc-compatible.
