Wedding/Engagement Ring Advice from someone who knows

So as some of you know I got engaged a few years back. I wanted to surprise her with a ring, but I'd never talked about Ring design with my Fiancé. So I went down to the local Jeweler that I trusted and put a Platinum band/diamond that I liked on layaway.
When I finally paid it off I picked it up, and Proposed on September 19, 2003, and all was good.

About a year a year goes by and I find out she doesn't like the design I picked out (and never did). So we (she) decides I'm going to buy a different ring. We went to the Jeweler several times, but she never found something she liked. We then went to a different dealer, and she decides on a new one.

We want to use the diamond from the Ring I already paid for so they agreed to put it in the new ring (a $100 fee). So we/they order the ring, and it shows up 2 months later. Then we find out its Gold, and we (she) wants the ring in Platinum like the first ring. They were happy to ship the ring back and make a new one in the more expensive metal.

Another month passes, and we finally receive the new ring and wedding band. And she is happy.

Now I’m stuck with an extra Platinum band that is diamond-less, and new huge bill that is yet to be paid off. (0% financing for one year).

Moral of the story: If you want to surprise your lady with a ring, buy a diamond you can afford at a place that has a WIDE variety of styles (I went to Shane Co. originally they have a narrow selection), and get a Basic White or Yellow Gold band. That way you haven’t sent a president for a more expensive metal, and depending on the store it’s easy to change out for something that’s more to her style.

Remember your tastes are NOT the same as your lady’s tastes.

damn, sorry to hear you had to go through all that. I just picked out what I thought was an elegant but simple design and all was good with my lady. Maybe I just lucked out and actually picked a good design. I don't know.

But I do know that the engagement itself is what is important, not how fancy shmancy your finger shackle is. Don't lose sight of that; its not worth it to buy yourself into a hole too deep to jump back out of.

It wouldn't heart to ask her "Do you like how it looks?"
I caught flack for not asking that. :p

Re: Wedding/Engagement Ring Advice from someone who knows

Good advice. I got engaged last year.... best thing we did was when were shopping I'd ask her what style ring she liked. I went with it and went alittle more than what she picked out but it was same idea and she loved it. She wanted 3 stone, i got 3 stone with 6 little diamonds on each end.
