HID Convesion Kit?

I am looking at HID 9007 Conversion kits. I also don't want to pay too much. I've "heard" (not too sure if it is true or not) that the ones made in Japan are no good...don't know why. There are inexpensive ones on ebay like $69 - $84 as compared to other ones from a supplier or a business that specializes in them > aprox $149-200 for the single xenon conversion kit - low beam only.
Q: What will happen when you flick on to the high beams with the single xenon bulbs....nothing? How can you go without high beams. Also, you can't saftey a car w/o high beams. Are the single low beams good enough that High beams are not required?
I am asking b/c the single xenon kit is cheaper than the Bi-xenon kit.
I looked into usedwinnipeg.com and there will be an advertisement for HID kits here. Ebay you can get them for around $40 ? about $35shipping or $80-$90 with Free shipping. F.Y.I - If you buy any of these from ebay, keep in mind the cheaper the cost of the kit, the less you will pay in taxes and customs at the border.
Attn: Keep in mind the crappy CDN to US exchange rate 0.78 / $1USD.
I personally want the 9007 Bi-xenon hi/low beam kit, which costs a bit more but I think it is worth it as when you drive on the highway.
I will add some links for the best deal that I found. Good luck. PM me if you need further info. Thanx Tony

Re: HID Convesion Kit?

Remember the golden rule: You buy what you pay for.

Most HID kits are usually around $150 - $200. GAS Performance usually has them one sale at car shows for $150 ish

Re: HID Convesion Kit?

The problem with HID 'kits' is that your headlamps aren't made for that kind of lightsource. There are plenty of examples of where HID kits will throw light everywhere except on the road. You'll have to ask Vimjah how well they worked though as he had them in his GA.

As explained before, the cheap ones are cheap for a reason. Over the past few years the kit makers were ruthlessly undercutting each other and using the cheapest components available to keep their profit margins up. The chinese have gotten very good at making knock-off's too that look like known, good brand components (like Hella and Philips) which all makes finding quality kits harder.

Re: HID Convesion Kit?

i think putting HID's in a non HID headlight housing is a terrible idea. It looks like shit, and blinds everyone. Makes me want to gouge my eyes out when somebody has a HID kit in a car that is not supposed to and is driving behind me,

Corey has some on his silver GA and they look great. It is just that my headlights are not bright enough, and I don't think replacing the bulbs will be good enough....correct me if I am wrong

Re: HID Convesion Kit?

If you are looking at getting brighter headlights try the following, instead of getting HID's

1) Go to Canadian Tire and spend the $10 on a bottle of PlastiX. It works by removing a very thin layer of plastic off of headlight, and taillight housings. Works amazing, trust me. Plus, the cars that I detailed at my place used it on all of them and the customers thought I replaced them with new ones :D

2) Change the actual bulbs. $44 if I recall for a new set of Silverstar lightbulbs. I'd suggest the following:

Sylvianna Silverstar
GE Night Hawks

3) Have you tried using your old stock headlights? Because the light output on the black housings are more refined, but lacking in the brightness ( due in part to most of the chrome being gone).

I'm going to agree with Jagey, and that HID's should only belong in proper HID housing units. Unfortunately, they don't make them for grand ams.

Just remember though, if you do get the HID's you will have to remove the Daytime Running light fuse ( thank you 04, 05 ) or else you will burn out the lights in no time. And just watch out for cops ( aim your lights properly )

Re: HID Convesion Kit?

silverstar ultra's is what I'm running and they are bright. Plus the plasticx. If you're housings are faded and plasticx doesn't fix them, you can also sand the housings down with extremely fine sand paper. I'll have to find the write up on how to do this though. More then just sanding them is involved.

Re: HID Convesion Kit?

Thanks fro the info. I REALLY appreciate it
My DRL's are already disconnected (fuse pulled) from the panel under the hood. For some reason when it was on the fuse was making a weird buzzing sound, so my mech pulled the fuse. I have super white bulbs for my front signals and pass these off as my DRL's not my headlights.

As for my stock headlights, I only have the right side as the left was damaged in my hit & run collision. So I bought the clear corner black housing lights and MPI paid for half.

I called Gas performance and Fast toys and assked them Q's about HID's. They said the Bi-xenon high/low beam bulbs puts out too much heat on high beam, and that the low beams are adequate for highway driving. I'm just not sure about the range. I have hit wildlife b4 and I just want lots of light to project out further in the distance so I can see further away.

I think I will take your advice and go w/ the Silverstar bulbs w/ the PlastX. It will also be cheaper this way. can you tell me what i am to do w/ the PlastX? Just rub it on?

Re: HID Convesion Kit?

Just works like wax, though you have to work really fast, as it dries super fast.

Wax on, then buff off. :D

Re: HID Convesion Kit?

There is no sanding required?
Rub in by hand I presume...not a buffer. I guess it doesn't matter

I was on grandamgt.com and found this about the silverstar bulbs. NOT GOOD
I think I'll try my luck w/ the GE nighthawks...rethinking now w/ HID's I'm a bit discouraged now.Sylvania Silverstars - GrandAmGT.com Forum

Any other suggestions?

Re: HID Convesion Kit?

I've seen HID look bulbs on eBay. Can you use these bulb as a direct replacement without using a HID kit?

Re: HID Convesion Kit?

Well I decided to put silverstar's in today, as my drivers side bulb stopped working.

So far, it seems nice & bright. Going to go for a cruise later on tonight, if anyone cares to join me.

Re: HID Convesion Kit?

I've been running silverstar bulbs for years now. They only burn out if you touch the glass part of the bulb. The oil on your hands shorten the life of the bulb. But this happens with all halogens. Just don't touch the glass. And if they burnt out before a year is up, keep the receipt and exchange them, since sylvania puts a one year warranty on all of their bulbs.

Re: HID Convesion Kit?

It's recommended to polish and buff plastic by hand. A powered buffer can actually cause plastic to melt if you aren't careful.
