weatherstripping question

was wondering if any of you knew if it was a good idea to reinstall the windshield weatherstripping once it comes loose(i'm talking about those two vertical pieces of plastic that run up either side of the windshield)..took a trip to kenora and noticed one was about to fly loose..so i used some weatherstripping adhesive to stick it back..but it's not perfect theres a slight gap on one side(the windshiled side)..so i'm worried it might let water in...what are your thoughts should i just get a new one or just leave it the way it is.

Re: weatherstripping question

If I am thinking of the same ones you are describing, the two side peices should be screwed in place. The two peices that are on the left and right hand side of the front windshield should have a couple of screws holding them in. the top and bottom ones on the front windsheild are held in with windshield liner and should not be able to come loose unless the side ones are removed.

yep i'm talking about the same ones..but i don't think mine are screwed in(had one of these fly right off once, and the replacement didn't appear to have screws)..i have a 2005 grand am..think the later models did away with the screws? thanks for the response..i'm due for an oil change i'll just ask them their what the best approach would be.

Re: weatherstripping question

I asked the same question when one of mine cracked from a rock and the other side is completely missing. The guy at the dealer said it wasn't a huge deal, but if i wanted to buy the replacement parts they are like 80$+ for ONE side. Its obscene that's why i haven't gotten around to repairing or buying new ones. They have been fine all summer, but im not too sure about winter ( guess i will find out ) =D All i can say is its expensive to repair

Re: weatherstripping question

yep i agree it's outrageous what they want for that piece of plastic ..the first one that disappeared(figure it came off in a car wash) was covered under warranty, thats when i found out how much it cost.honestly i think that things like this should be covered for the lifetime of a car..it shouldn't just come off when driving on a highway...seems like a design flaw to me.

Re: weatherstripping question

i agree too. I never thought to get the other one covered under warranty. Good Idea ( i have bumper to bumper and still have the piece ) . I would still have to pay for the other one that was damage from a rock. Hope everything works out for you =D

Re: weatherstripping question

if you go the warranty route, just tell them it just came off and you don't know where it is..they should just put a new one on for you(they did for me)...
